MANNING OF UNITED STATES SHIPS.

Notwithstanding the optimism

of the United States authorities that their vessels would be mann- ed by American crews, it has often been felt that the time would have to come when it would be realised that ships could be built faster than crews could be provided for them. That time has evidently Base Farrived, for it was shown in a recent article that there was a dearth of marine engineers in the United States, and now comes the announcement tha the Shipping Board require 1,500 firemen for the merchant service. The age limit is from 18. to 35, and the pay £15 a month.
