In order to safeguard the dye industry from foreign competition, the Government has prohibited, except by licence, the importation into the United Kingdom of all derivatives of coal tar capable of being used - or adapted for use as dyestuffs, &', for not less than 10 years. The as Government is subscribing for u considerable number of shares in the new company on the same basis as that on which the shares are now offered to the public, thus showing its recognition of the Baramunt importance of estab lising the dyes industry in this country on a basis designed [adequately to supply the textile trade and other dye-users with the dyes for which they formerly depended on Germany. The number of shares. subscribed by. the Government is 850,000 Pre- ference, and a similar amount of Preferred Ordinary. Two of the firectors have been appointed by the Government-namely. Lord Monkton and Sir Henry Birchen- ugh. A determined effort, it will be seen, is now being made in establish a great and necessary national industry. Mr. M. S. Sharp, chairman of the Bradford Dyers Association, on the last recasion when he addressed the shareholders of that company, pointed out that there is a oblign=" tion upon every one interested in! dyes to support the new under- taking, not in the hope of large- dividends, but as a national duty.
