THE EMS.P. IN THE VICTORY.
MARCH.
In the great peace procession held in London, when the nation was given an opportunity of viewing and acclaiming repre- sentatives of practically every branch of the Allied forces which since 1914 have fought and bled for that great ideal, the freedom- of nations, it was only right that the officers and men of our gallant Mercantile Marine should be given some place of honour in the procession, despite the limit- stions of its character. Right well did the vast multitude which thronged the route cheer the 500 who marched and right well did they deserve it. Conspicuous the house flags of amongst the various lines which were " borne ahead of the contingent the Crown and Cross of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. This old company, which was established 80 years. ago, was represented by a body of 30 officers and men poder the command of Captain G. S. Gillard.

The war experiences of this 30 alone would furnish material for a lengthy book. Practically every one of them had been torpedoed at least once, and the remainder had all at some time experienced hair-breadth escapes. Some had been shelled, others bombed, and several had the great distinction of having assisted in the destruction of "U" boats. There was not one of them who did not richly deserve the Mercantile Marine War Medal Ribbon with which they were all decorated.
