SHIPPING NEWS.

CARDIFF SHIPPING.. During July there was a boom in shipping shares at Cardiff. It was brought about by the removal of restrictionson shipping, coupled with the reduction, in the excess profits duty. The presumption was that for the next five or six. years at least, the shipping indust ry will be in a very strong posit on, and that new tonnage, or acquired tonnage, must for that period be assured on a remuners- tire return, Half-a-dozen new shipping companies have been formed in Cardiff during July.

SHIP-REPAIRING RECORD. Details of the way in which famous warships damaged at the Dogger Bank and Jutland were ratarned whole to the Grand

Fleet in record time were given at the closing meeting of the North-East Coast Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders at Newcastle. The Lion, after Dog- ger Bank, had 1500 square feet of her outer bottom plating damag- ed, and arrived in the Tyne draw- ing 37 feet forward. The vessel was heeled over eight degrees to enable four coffer dams to be fitted and the latter were then pumped dry. One hundred and fifty tons of concrete, with which the damaged parts had been filled, had to be blast- ed out. The repairs to the Lion occupied seven weeks. In the case of the super-Dreadnought Marlborough, badly torpedoed ät Jutland, time was of the greatest possibleimportance at that critical period. The firm entrusted with the work undertook to finish re- pairs in six weeks, and the promise was ridiculed by many.. The mes, however, agreed practically to live on the job until it was finished, and messing aûd | sleeping arrangements were pro

vided on a vessel alongide. The men worked from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., with intervals only for meals. small night shift, carrying on a special boat service, was run be- tween the firm's yard and the dock for the expeditious transport of material, and the vessel un- docked, in the allotted time. perform- great
