to acknowledge the receipt

of your letter of the 11th of November, respecting a claim on the part of the Indian Govt "against" H. Brit. Colonial Govt "China" for the sum of £2503, 18s, 10d, together with a letter from

the Treasury

and Buchers

bearing on the matter.

I am to state for the information of the Duke of Argyll,

that Lord Kimberley is unable on the part of the Colony of Hongkong to entertain the application that has been made (for relief) in error, by

the Govt of India, as he is not aware of any

sufficient

ground for the demand, which does not appear to be in conformity with any existing arrangement.
