workers augurs well for success in this strike and in the bigger struggle that it is to come for the control of all the resources of the country." It was suggested that the new Parliament Build- ings should be the Labour Temple of the future. On May 19 Ivens said "In a short time there will be no need to use the weapon. of the strike. We shall not need to strike when we own and con- tral industry, and we won't re linquish the fight until we do control. In March fast the first definite step towards the organisation of the Red forces was taken at Calgary. A convention of Labour leaders resolved to separate the western unions from the Ameri-
can Federation of Labour and inaugurate a movement.to.conso- lidate all the labour bodies of Canada into one big union.
The conventionsent fraternal greetings to the Russian Soviet Government and to the Spartacists of Germany. It demanded release of all politi- cal prisoners in Canada and immediate withdrawal of the Allied

It insisted that only such alien enemies as desired to leave the country should be deported, and that these should have free tran- sportation. The western unions, with the exception of the typo graphical bodies, voted over- whelmingly in favour of the one- union movement. It is said that in Winnipeg the vote was 95 per cent. in favour of the programme of the Calgary Convention.

Tha'speaker in the course of an absorbing review of the growth of the advertisement agency remarked that the American advertising agency was an exam- pla of a business which at one time was not regarded as tan eutirely respectable business, but had in a short time become a highly reputable profession. From & calling in which there were many. questionable practices and a careless disregard for common honesty, it had become a profess- ion with a code of ethica 'as} rigorous as that of any other pro- fession. The first advertising agent in America set up business in Philadelphia in 1840, making connections with a number of papers soliciting advertising and receiving a cammission from the newspapers by way of compensa- tian.

A quarter of a century later, the business underwent a distinct change, due to the work of Mr. G. F. Rowell, who bought up a column, each from more than 100 newspapers and, dividing it into smaller spaces, sold them to advertisers at his own terms, Advertisements then rather took the form of business cards, "copy" was rarely changed and there were instances of such advertise- ments appearing without change for 20 years. Sometimes Mr. Rowell failed to sell all the space he had bought and this be even tually utilised for the purpose of advertising a proprietary medicine of his own which by these means became one of the most widely sold liver pills in America.
