AMERICAN SHIPPING LOSSES. Fifty-one American sailing vessels were lost by acts of war from the time the United States entered the conflict. There were also thirty American sailing craft sold abroad. To offset this loss Maine yards turned out during 1918 twenty-seven sailing vessels, of 23,436 natt tons. In 1917 Maine yards launched seventeen schooners, of 12,291 tons. This makes a total of 35.727 sail ton- nage produced in Maine during. the war against. 10,000 tons löst and transferred.
