NO SMOKING.
TELEGRAM TO PRIMITIVE METHODISTS
..
Atthe 100th annual Conference of the Primitive Methodist Church at Grimsby recantly the following telegram was received by the President:
"Please urge the saints to re- frain from smoking at Ebenezer. This, insidious and imperious bahit is destroying the stamina of our country, stripping youth of ,its bloom and beauty and man- hood of its virility, with a reflex influence on morals which is truly deplorable. Men of God should not smoke.
The Rev. James Watkin, of Chesterfield, was elected pre- sident and he based his pre- sidential address on Shelley's words, "The world's great age begins anew." What sort of men, he asked, were needed for this new age? The men needed were man of intelligence and vision, men with a ravived sense of human brotherhood, and men who would preserve the spon- taneity and freedom of spiritual life. There had in the past been a lack of vision? amongst the political parties who attempted to deceive the people by old shibboleths and catch words. a vision had come. The Church was not so great us she ought to be. The Church was snæmic. There was not sufficient red blood in her. They could not. have a healthy, vigorous Church whose veins were exhausted of good red blood.
Alderman Harvey Robinson, a former Mayor of Ossett, who was elected to the vice-presidency, said the times called for supreme courage. In his opinion the Church, as such, had little respon- sibility for what he called the. fabric of social life. The Church had dabbled too much on thei material side of things, and had thereby lost dignity without relieving the pressure or hasten- ing the birth of the new day. The business of religion was to provide a purified motive in social reform, and when -that Christian motivo was allied with intelligence and balanced judgment they teed have no fear in regard to the terms of the pending settlement or the possi- ibility of future war. Mr.Robinson Aurged his fellow laymen to under- take larger tasks in the Church. Temarking that the business responsibility should be shoulder- sed by men of business gifts and
