The Osaka Mainichi states that the N.Y.K. has decided to effect an increase in freights on exträ steamers on European lines from the 1st of nert August. According to the paper, the freight for sun- dries will be increased to 150 shillings from 100 shillings and that for beans and other cereals to 195 shillings from 135 shillings. The oil freight will also rise by 50 shillings to 150 shillings. The N. Y. K. also contemplates rais- ing freights on regular steamers: in proportion to the above in Tibodas creases. In this case, however. Tilpanas permission must first be secured riikini from the Department of Com- Tjiliwong munications. The application is now under consideration by the Department, and it is expected that it will be granted. The reason for the decision of the N.Y.K. is the shortage of cargo space owing to the brisk export of foodstaffs to Europe from Japan. Consumers in Europe in fact are to pay more for their food-supplies to enable the N.Y.K. to continue paying 50 per cent, dividends.

WAR TIME SHIPPING.

It is interesting to note that during the war up to the end of 1918. Japanese shipping circles' acquired a I revenue of about ¥1,000,000,000 from the charter freight, sale of steamers, etc. from foreign countries. In 1917, the revenue reached its maximum.
