"THE GOLD FETISH," Among the many resolutions passed at the conference of the Associated Chambers of Com- merce in London was one moved by Mr. Moore, of Liverpool, ex- pressing agreement with the recommendation of Lord, Cun- liffe's Currency Committee that the gold backing for the paper currency should be re-established as quickly as possible. He did not want, he said. to see the Soverign in circulation again because that was an unnecessary waste of gold and the conserva- tion of their gold supply was a great economic necessity. Mr. Hill, of Birmingham, pointed out that the last four and a half years had seen a scale of production and continuous employment and prosperity which had been with- out parallel. That had been done without the assistance of gold. and so it should not be necessary to reintroduce the golden fetish in time of peace. The resolution was carried by a large majority:
