THE RECENT CHARTER RECURD Since the conclusion of the June at 11 a.m. Armistice, the enforcement of the Shipping Restriction Act has been/moderated in Japan. and the restriction upon the sale of Japanèse ships, to foreign owners is perhaps the only feature in operation, the charter parties having been freed from all Telephone No. 36.. restraints. Recently the Yan- ashita K.K. chartered thesteamer Buyo Maru, 4.100 tons. to a foreign firm on a trip to Mar- seilles at 30 shillings per ton. It is the highest record of charterage recently. A little previously, the Kawasaki K. K. had chartered a new steamer to the Czecho- Slovakia at 19 yen per ton, but; she is to be used for the transport- ation of troops, and certain extra equipments and arrangements Tjikini have had to be installed, and on Tjipanas this account the nett earnings of the the Company will be not more have accommodation for a limited number of saloon-passengers. THE NEXT DANCE.
THE SHIMMY," OR TICKLE TOE"
A careful reader of the daily Press unversed in the methods of the modern ballroom. would pro bably hazard a guess that the next new dance will be either the "Shimmy," which Mr. de Cour- ville threatens to introduce, or the latest version of "The Tickle Toe, that Mr. Henry de Bray and pretty Miss Rosie Campbell have initiated.
In the dancing world, however, they do not do things in that way (writes Philip J. S. Richardson, the Editor of the Dancing Times, in the London Daily Mail). They do not take ready-made" dances from the stage and intro- duce them into the bali. The converse is usually the case; and a ballroom dance is first of all borrowed, then adapted, and finally most horribly perverted on the stage.
When a new, dance comes into favour in the ballroom nobody can ever say with certainty who first introduced it, where it
