A PLAYER'S BEST AGE.
A recent article on the best age for ball games made no mention of golf, and one felt grateful to the writer for his iron self-control. in that he did not even allude to it as an old man's game.“ “..... If he had tackled the question, he would have found. it not only extremely bewildering. but one of some considerable delicacy, For indeed, Mr. Bantam's hor- 'rified whisper to Mr. Pickwick. "Nobody is fut or old in Bath," is today, with the necessary. alteration. peculiarly applicable to golf.
Nobody. so far as we know at present, can play golf quire so well as Vardon, Braid, and Taylor, and two of them were born in 1870 and the other in 1871. Taylor, by the way. is the youngest of the three, and with characteristic impetuosity youth has just been infuriating The Scotsmen by wild statements that they do not know how to play their approach'shots. 1869 is still regarded as one of the great vintage years of amateurs,
of
It produced the late Mr. F. G. Tait, Mr. J. L. Low, Mr.. H.S. Colt. Mr. Sidney Fry, and Mr. Hilton. The answer
the
arithmetical problem involved leaps to the eye. It is painfully easy to do the sum. but not ut all easy to find an amateur war- runted to beat Mr. Hilton.
"IS THEIR.. POMP."
11
I would be simple enough to probe yet further and to pile up statistics at once glorious and brutal, but it would tend to no definite conclusion. The real. tagtless question is not whether these and some other illustrious veterans are to-day better than young whipper-snappers of 35 or so, but whether they are as good now as when they were, to use an expression of Davie Ayton's "in their pomp," Mr. Horace Hutchin- son once wrote that no amateur Was at his best after 30; AT first sight it would seem that
he
have written in a mood of temporary depression and that he disproved his statement by his own play. But his two Amateur Champion- ships were won when he was 26 and 27 year old respectively.. On' the other hand he was 31 when he achieved perhaps his best and certainly his most unlucky per-

the first 36 holes in the very year that the competition was first extended to 72 holes. Mr. Hilton's two Open Campionships were won in 1892 and 1897.
Fourteen years after his second win he came within two strokes of beating Vardon and Massy at Sandwich and winning, yet another. I shall always think that if a good tee shot to the 12th hole had not been trapped in a nasty little invisible corner of a, bunker.... But it is useless to dwell on "ifs”. Enough to say that had he won it would have been. from

least. Яt the greatest of ail vie tories. 1 believe, however, that Mr. Hilton. would agree that he played the most consistently brilliant golf of his life in the .. year following his second win at Hoylake in 1897, and he was than about 28 years old. Mr. John Ball won his one Open Championship ut Prestwick in 1890 when he was 27. He has been winning Amateur Championships more.

the circumstances of his last
victory in 1912 were among the most obviously splendid of all: Westward Ho stretched to the last inch wind and rain, Abe Mitchell, then Mr. Abe, driving the ball out of sight, and a struggle prolonged to the 38th hole. But those who were play- ing in championships in the late eighties and early nineties are united in stating that the most terrible Mr. Bell was the” one "that they had to meet; not more accurate, perhaps, than the one of the twentieth century, but with mote sting and more fire and an even greater power of laucing at supreme moment a thrust that no one could parry. Mr. Laidlay won his two Amateur. Championships at 29 and 31 respectively.
Mr. Leslie Balfour Melville scarcely affords a fair example because, astonishing as it may appear, the books tell us he was
