PRESS CONGRESS:
TO MEET NEXT YEAR.
The date for the assembling of the Press Congress of the World which had been tentatively set for November 11, 1919, the first anng. versary of the signing of the armistice in the World's War, has been re-set for 1920, the exact month and day to be definitely determined and announced later.
The new date was decided upon by the Executive Committee of the Congress following conference with, and approval of, the New South Wales Government.
The sessions will be held at Sydney, and the programme carried out as originally planned.
Re-setting the date was made necessary because of conditions that could not be foreseen at the time the 1919 date was chosen. The chief reasons which caused the com- mittee to take the action it did were: first, the existence of con-
great
gested ocean transportation con- ditions which made travel ug- usually expensive and difficult until wartime control of shipping ceases, as it will probably do toward the end of the year: second. that politically, socially, and economically, the nations of Europe to which the Congress look for a large measura of active membership have devel oped an unrest notforeseen when the conclusion of the armistice was made the starting point for convening the Congress, unrest which will doubtless be allayed after the adjournment of the Peace Conference; and, third, the outbreak of influents in Australia, fortunately so far in a mild form, but likely to recur at : the end of this year, and the virulence of the epidemic in Europe and in the East, fore- shadow possibilities of quarantine and other annoyances and delays for overseas travellers.
