Whael compound, whose

presence in the ground rauses no suspicion, is becoming more strengthened. The engine spark. theory has long been dismissed as impossible. Just before the outbreak of the last fire on the 24th. one shifting engine was pulling a train of 16 goods cars all loaded with produce just, ar- rived from the interior and the engine had to fly for safety just as the fire started. In the last (fifteenth fire) two storage Tilbodas blocks of Nos, 20 and 19 were

Tillztjap practically reduced to ashes. The Timanoek Railway Wharf management, im- mediately after the successive fires on the 7th and 10th ult.. transferred the control of the watchmen's staff to the Freight Section, and three watchmen are assigned to every two storage blocks or 300 tsubo of storage. The last fire demonstrated the complete inadequacy of the open space of 48 feet left between any two storage blocks as a preventive. against be spread of fire, es- pecially when there is a fresh wind. The flames in the last fire were carried over two full blocks and stopped only at the seashore. CHINA COAST GAZETTE. Mr. P. A. Watson has been ap- pointed second officer. Felching Mr. C.
