A CALCUTTA REPORT.

Calcutta, 3rd April. It is pro- posed to hand over the German steamers which are now lying in terned in Java to the British India Company. These vessels will be employed in carrying food-stuffs to Germany. It is understood they will also be utilised to carry passengers from Indis to the Unit- ed Kingdom and thereby relieve the present traffic congestion. A representative of the B., I. Company has sailed for Java in this connection.

SHIP'S FIRE AT TINGKOU. On the morning of the 7th inst. a fire broke out in the hold of the teamer Kawachigawa Maru (769 tons) anchoring at the S. M. R. Jetty at Yingkou. The ship listed forty degrees on being flooded in the holds with the water poured thereinto to stop the fire. The fire was put under control, and the damage was limited to the cargoes. The steamer is owned by the Daibo K. K. of Japan, with the Tunpho Co., for agent at Yingkou. She was loading 800 tons of millet for Wonsan (Chosen) The total

The S. M. R. Co. Harbour Works Office has no fresh enter- prise on the programme for the next fiscal year. The Third (the westernmost) Wharf. the construction of which was put in band in March, 1913, is to be completed by the fiscal year of 1919.
