CHINESE WOMAN WINS FIRST PRIZE.
Singapore, April, 13. The Federated Malay States Lottery, the last of the Malayan Lotteries, was drawn on Saturday.
The first prize ($120,000) was won by a Chinese woman of Perak; the second prize (860,000) ticket was sold in Ipoh; whilst the third prize ($30,000) was won by Mr. Manasseh, of Penang.
THE CHINESE PEACE CONFERENCE.

The Chinese Peace Conference is meeting daily and announces that it is working harmoniously and progressing rapidly.
SHANGHAI CLOCKS PUT FORWARD.

The status of the Fire Brigade is uncertain. Members are resigning on the announcement of the Council's intention to professionalise the force, but their resignations have not yet been accepted.

General Borton does not go to Australia, but only to Java, to discuss with the Dutch authorities their arrangements for a link between Singapore and Australia. General Borton, inter- viewed on leaving for Java ports, said the visit had been satisfactory but he could say nothing definite for publication.

DOVERNMENT HAS SITUATION IS HAND.

The "Vossiche - Zeitung declared that the agitation for a general strike has slackened. The Government, however, has taken all precautionary measures.
The Majority Socialist workers have issued a manifesto against a general strike owing to the probable stoppage of food supplies.
Government troops have taken possession of Magdeburg. Public services have been resumed.
GENERAL STRIKE AT BRUNSWICK,

Berlin April, 9. The workers of Brunswick have begun a general strike. The banks, newspapers, railways and trans have been suspended. Landtag has adjourned indefinitely. The newly elected Workers Council is meeting to proclaim the Council the sole sovereign power of Brunswick. The Bavarian Diet has re-opened at Ham. burg. The Minister of the Interior is confident as regards the situation.

NATIONALISTS RELEASED.
Cairo, April 7. The Proclamation by General Allenby, mentioned in the House of Commons, orders the release of four deported Nationalist leaders who are now permitted to leave Egypt..
THE KING'S PREROGATIVE RIGHTS QUESTIONED.
AN INTERESTING COMMERCIAL SUTT
London, April 10.
The Court of Appeal by a majority has allowed the appeal of of Dekeysers Hotel, London, in a test action against the Crown, who had requisitioned the premises, for payment of rent and for compensation during nine months of occupation.
The Crown argued that H. M. the King was empowered to take a subject's property for the Defence of the Realm without pay-

The Master of the Rolls decided that there was no prerogative right to seize property for administrative purposes in connection with Defence of the Realm, without indemnifying the owners.
Dekeysers claimed £13,520 for occupation alone.

INCREASED IMPORT DUTY ON FOREIGN TEA
London, April 4. The Times says it is understood that the Treasury is considering a proposal to increase the import duty on foreign tea by 2d. per pound in the forthcomming Budger, while the duty on Indian and Ceylon rea will be unchanged.

THE GENERAL WAR MEDAL.
London, April 19.
In the House Commons, replying to Col Ivor Phillipps. Mr. Churchill said the general war medal had been decided on and the design of the ribbon approved. A free preliminary issue would be made to all who were entitled to the medal, whether serving or discharged. Over two million yards of ribbon for such 1914 men as actually participated in fighting would be needed.

Berlin, April 10. The Bavarian Government is of opinion that Bolshevism at Munich will collapse without military action, owing to the stoppage of foodstuffs. Meanwhile the Government is preparing for a long sojourn at Hamburg.
The Berliner Tageblatt states that rail traffic to Munich is being suspended, thus 'cutting off coals.

Paris, April 1 The Supreme Economic Council on Thursday adopted a. resolus tion calling the attention of the Associated Governments in the extreme gravity and urgency of the present economic situation in Europe.
SUPERVISION OF SAAR VALLEY.
The Council of Four on Wednesday made provision for the League of Nations to exercise a general supervision over the Saar Valley for a period of 15 years, and came to an agreement on the Saar Valley, leaving the sovereignty over the valley unchanged, but accorded to France free of duty sufficient coal for the Lorraine district, with the privilege to Germany of restoring the Lans mines, thus relieving the Saar Valley of that charge.
