COLOMBO OIL STORAGE At the annual meeting of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, held in Colombo on the 18th February, the Chairman, Mr. Jasz Lochore, in the course of his speech, referring to the Colombo harbour, said the progress in the works connected with the oil May, from Yokohama depot and the storage of liquid fuel continues, and also the construction of the lakeside warehouse and the har- boar canal. But

highly important question will require to be dealt with by Government very soon, and that is the possibility of expansion of the Colombo harbour. There can be little doubt, he said, that the presen: capacity of the harbour will, in the near future, be found inadequate to meet the demands made upon it, and a decision must be come to as to whether it is preferable to expand by means of inland wat docks or in some other manner; or to develop the harbours of Trincomalee and Galle. He made a point of saying that consideration of the subject should not be unduly postponed. 35 whatever the decision, time must elapse before any works undertaken in the near future can be brought to SHANGHAI completion in order to satisfy the TIENTSIN...

Both in Great Britain and in America, State research committees are busy perfecting the details of the process. A big fight is likely to be made by the vested interests (labour, and otherwise) concerned in riveting, but electrical en- gineers are confident that welding will triumph both in the construc- tion of hulls and in the making and repairing' of tanks, ventila- tors, and other portions of ship equipment.
