THE PARIS CONFERENCES.

MR. LLOYD GEORGE IS DEMAND,

Paris, March 17. President Wilson, M. Clemenceau and Signer Orlando have written a joint letter to Mr. Lloyd George urging him to postpone his departure for England in view of the urgency of the problems with which the Conference is danding, the importance of which the writers opine outweighs even the labour disputes in Britain. Mr. Lloyd George awaits a decision from the London Cabinet"therennent.

The Supreme Council adopted the military and air conditions of the preliminary peace treaty, also the paral conditions except the questions of Heligoland and Kie! Canal The terms include the prohibition of the construc tion of submarines by Germany.

THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS.

Paris, March 18. During the interval since the arrival of President Wilson discussion in the War Council has mainly centred on the possibility of incorporating the League of Nations in the preliminary peace terms in accordance with the wish of the President. It is thought President Wilson has made no official statement regarding his reasons for this. It is understood he is moved by lear that should the peace terms not include the League of Nations interest in his favourite project might die down and its inauguration be left to some distant date. The French view is that suck inclusion is neither necessary nor desirable. The French seem to feel that if the Covenant is rushed through the questions vital to France such as the future security of Rhineland might be shelved The British think peace at the earliest pos- sible moment is absolutely necessary so that the world may get again to work; but it is believed they are disposed to meet the desire of the President-to-tar as they can without sacrificing essential principles.

BLACK LABOUR OUTLOOK.

London, March 13.

Mr. Thomas in starting for Paris described the outlook as black. This is the view taken by Labour corres- pondents to dar. Ther warn against optimism based on the idea that the Coal Commission disclosures are bound to result in satisfaction of the miners' demands, pointing out that the compromise which the Government expected to offer is not likely to include nationalisation which is now Terte disinclination to sbate any demand, while the transport-workers express dissatisfaction with the condi- tions attached to the forty-four hours week offered them,

The strike which has broken out throughout Notting- bamshire and affects forty thousand miners has arisen from a local wage dispute apart from the national programme already rabled The owners and men's attitudes upon essential points are entirely irreconcilable.

THE COAL COMMISSION.

London, March 18.

The Coal Commission held their last public session yester- day. It is forecasted that the Commission's report will re- commend the nationalisation of mines, an eight-hour day and a ten per cent, increase in wages.
