SHIP CONSTRUCTION IN INDIA.
A number of firms in India have undertaken the construction of modern ships of about 1,200 tons deadweight capacity. These are sailing craft, having in some cases oil engines installed as auxiliary power and are intended for the coasting trade. Two steam- ers, the Calcutta and Bombay. have been launched, one con- structed at the Government dock- yard in Bombay, and the other in the Government dockyard at Kidderpore, Calcutta. They are of composite construction, 125ft. in length in beam, 23 ft and 12ft. in depth and are propelled at a speed of 9 knots by steam engines imported from England, but the whole of the material for the hulls is of Indian origin. There are four other ships of this kind, two being built at Calcutta and two Bombay. Their displacement is approximately 540 tons. Another vessel named the Prosperous has been launched from the yard of Messrs. Eurn & Co., Calcutta, to the order of Mr. 8, N. Boy, of Chittagong; he is 152ft, in length, and has a carrying capacity of about 500 tons, with accommodation for 12 first-class" passengers and 300 deck pas- sengers. She will trade between Calcutta and Colombo,
