in the Formosa Channel, the 58 resulted in loss of 4, which was the total loss. The Rona collided with several other vessels, resulting in loss of lives and a valuable cargo.

The Ara was also seriously damaged and had to put into Amoy, where she was temporarily repaired, before proceeding on her voyage to Shanghae. The owners and agents of the "Ara" being French subjects were not unnaturally desirous that the question of the liability for the damage should be decided in France, but it would seem to have been ultimately arranged that the case should be heard in the Supreme Court (Admiralty Jurisdiction) of Hong Kong; for on the 3rd of May following the arrival of the Ara, a suit was instituted by the owners of the Ara against the Rona. A warrant was also taken out for the arrest of the Ara; but the Proctor for the Ara undertook by letter to give bail to answer.
