Sir John Simon writes as follows:
"I may not know much about military strategy," the Prime Minister, Mr. Lloyd Cheorge, modestly observed the other day, "but I think I know something about political strategy." No claim was ever so abundantly justified; and whoever won the war, there is no doubt who it is who has won the election. It is an immense personal triumph, and it would be more ingenerous marling not to recognise how much Mr. Lloyd George's great qualities of energy and optimism, which contributed so much to our common triumph against the foe, have served him in his victory over his former colleagues and followers. Defeated can didates are prone to dyspepsia, but I have no liking for people who labour to explain away their defeat, or who proclaim that the country has gone to the dogs marely because they have gone to the bottom of the poll. The Khaki Election of 1900 was followed by the Progressive triumph of 1906, and history is not written in a day, even though election results are all announced on one day.
