LOWER DECK FAMILIES.

BY A NAVAL OFFICER,

It is well known to every student of history that certain prominent families, particularly in the West of England, have for many generations been associated with the Royal Navy, contribut ing every hundred years or so a naval officer of marked distine tion, in addition to many others who serve their country long anal faithfully but, through lack of opportunity or other causes, fail

to attain to the heights of beir

profession.

It is far less widely known that there are families also which for generations past have seat shein sons on to the lower decks of His Majesty's ships. Such is, however, the case, and there arr

families at many Portsmouth and Chatham and Devonport in which father and s are at this moment both serv- ing under the White Ensign.

The lower deck is a hard school for the son of a warrant jefficer, who, in spite of his meagre pay, usually busts at least the same standard of comfor; and refinement as that of the average bank clerk. The cramped sleep- ing quarters, the lack of privacy, the oogh-and-ready meals, all come as a shock to a boy brought up in such a lune. Yet-very many warrant others are well content that their sons should | follow in their footsteps, find their own level among rough bat good- ELECTIONS hearted comrades, and finally fore their way to the fore just as their fathers did.

TWO TO TAKE PLACE SHORTLY.

It is noticed in the feceffe that, on the lower deck and the other
