THOSE MICROBES!
An amusing story was told by Dr. A. T. Schofield in disc ssing Christian Sanity" at a meeting of the Victoria Institute in the Central Hall, Westminster. "I saw a lady the other day," he said, "who was brought to me because she would do nothing but wash herself; and, in the same week, wealthy barrister who would not wash at all In stating their cases both

FRENCH PRISONERS SHOT.
The inhaman brutality which has characterised the Germans attitude towards Allied prisoners has received further illustration in the particularly revolting con ditions in the camp at Langen- Balze. According to the first re- por.s received by the Spanish Ambassador in Berlin, nine French prisoners were shot point blank by the German guards at this camp, and fifteen others severely wounded. Two dele- gates from the Spanish Embassy sent to Langensalze, confirmed the report of the sbominable crime committed against the un- happy French prisoners, who were impatiently awaiting their forthcoming liberation. the Spanish Minister at Berne has port of the Spanish delegates, as informed the French Government, shows that the attitude of the Prisoners in no way justified such methods of repressión.

All the machinery for the de mobilisation of the Armies in France is now working, writes an officar engaged in the work over- SORS, As yet it is running si very low speed, but when one considers the enormous amount of detail necessary-the o cuments to be issued, the lorries and rolling stock required for transporting parties by stages to their port of embarkation, satis- | factory progrees has been made. Miners are the first to be released, The first notification received by the men is a paragraph in the orders of his unit to the effect that those belonging to this trarie will report to the Orderly Krom. There the preliminaries are gone through. Then the order for their release is received, and the parties are taken to their corps' concentration camp. Here they. spend one night. Every possible. arrangement is made, or is being made, for their comfort. Sait- able sleeping quarters, dining accommodation, and recreation huts are being built. The men then make another step on their way to England, by lorry or by train, to their Army staging camp. One night here, and they entrain for their port of enbarka- tion.
RESCUE ON GOODWINS.
A thrilling rescue of seven men from the Goodwin Sands was made recently by the crew of a small bost. It is not often that a vessel which is being towed rescues the craft which is towing her. But this happened in the present instance while the only | light to guide the rescuers was. an electric pocket torch. A13.40 am. the tug Seagull, with a crew of seven, having in tow the three-masted barque Margarita, with a crew of 18, bound, From Hall to France with a cargo of coal, ran sahore on the north-west Goodwins in

The crew of the Seagull were forced to lie flat on the side of their vessel to avoid being washed off. The captain of the barque and his men managed to lower the boat, and with the aid only of a pocket torch they reached the tug. Fortunately the master had a new battery with him, and when the light went out he refilled the torch, They had to flash the light on to each man in order to reach him,
