LARCENT OF COAL

In the Maine Court, this morn. ing, before Commander Beckwith, RN. Marine Magistrate, Chan Tai and Wong Chun, masters of licenced boats were charged with throwing & quantity of coal, believed to have been anlawfully obtained, into the the waters of the Harbour, with the object of preventing seizure and discovery. the coal being part of the cargo of: the s.s. The accused pleaded not guilty. Sergeant Bond stated that on February 14 he was on duty in the Harbour, on patrol work, when he saw the defendants' sampan leave the Koyei Maru, which was discharging coal into a barge. He called upon the de- fendants to stop, but they refused to comply. He followed them and fired a round from his revolver, whereupon the defendants upset the boat and swam to a junk, where they were subsequently found, hiding in the bilges of the junk The sampan was three quarters full of coal when witness first saw it.

The accused stated they became frightened when the shat was fired and jumped to one side of the boat which capsized it.
