The following is an abstract from the paper on "Some Iron and Coal Fields of Hunan” which was read by Mr. Wang Chung-yu, the meeting of the Engineering Society of China recently. Mr. Wang is a Can- tonese, formerly Commissioner of Industry at Canton. On January 7. 1918, a paper was read before the Engineering Society of China! by Mr. Wang Chung-yu on the Iron and Coal fields of An Hwa.) Sin. Hwa, and Pao Ching districts, Hunan, in which he describes the geological formation and the method of working the various mines in these districts which latter were visited by him during the course of a tour. Al- together some eight mines were described in considerable detail and figures of cost of production, according to the present crude methods of obtaining the iron from the ore, were given. They are, however, losing their im- portance and are worked merely on account of their proximity to the furnaces which are not dependent of them for their regular supply of ore. The author gave figures showing that trom these districts could not compete in price with Lore at present delivered at Taych on the Yangtze, and that on account of the cheap lahour, mechanical appliances would not cheapen the cost of production to any great extent, if at all. He also showed that by putting up a blast furance to reduce the ore cost of pig iron so
All produced could not compete with Hanyang. Even at present with ception of the high price of iron, native pro- ducers are having a hard time. judging by the number of furnaces that are lying idle. Regarding the coal deposits it is Semianthracitic, high in sulphur and
very friable and can only be considered of local importance. The author, however, entertains some hope for the bituminous caking coal deposits of Paoching. Hanchow, and Shen Ning districts, especially if railway connection between Paoching and Siang Tan is established so that the coal can be marketed along the Siang River and the Yangtze River.
