DEMOBILISING THE BUSES.

Designs for a new and in- proved motor ommibus have bean prepared by the London General Ommibus Company, and this type is to be put on the streets as soon as possible. The LG,O.C, state that they fully appreciate the inadequacy of the present ser vices, and are making every effort to improve them. If sufficent

men and petrol are released they could put 200 spare buses on the road by the end of this month, and 250 new buses could be added in the early spring.

THIRD SPANISH FLU WAVE.

A third wave of Spanish fever appears to be sweeping westward over Europe. Since the middle of November the number of cases and deaths has been increased rapidly in various places in Austria. In Vienna, for example, 339 persons died during the week November 10-16, while

in the following week the number was 138. Similar figures are reported from other] centres. A curious feature in this resuscitation of the illness is that a much larger proportion of men are dying than women. During the Vienna epidemic in the spring the proportion was about equal, while the first week

MASTERS OF THE REVELS.

"The need for a gaiding hand j in our rational rejoicing was obviously displayed in our recent armistice demonstrations, in

which joyous emotion petered out into impotent and meaningless mafficking. Yet such an outburst, wisely directed, might have been turned into a noble expression of our national spirit, beautified by pageantry and music. In view of this illustration of something lacking, the idea has suggested itself to leading musicians and others, that there should be a confederation of London choirs and choral societies, SQ that through music and pageantry some sort of broad expression may be given to our national character on such oc- casions as demand its display. To get the necessary machinery for such a schetne a meeting was held under the chairmanship of Professor Allen, Mus. Doc., at St. Anne's Schools, Deanstreet, and musicians, artists, pageant makers, and municipal represent- atives attended. Such well- known musicians as Dr. Welford Davies, Dr. Vaughan Williams, and Dr. Terry are supporting the scheme.

The liabilities in the first case were £6.451, and in the second £4,530, and in each instance 20s. in the S was paid to creditors and the adjudication was annul- ed. Failure in the last case was attributed to gambling losses and expenditure over the income of £2,000 allowed him under his father's will. There were £9,852 Liabilities and £747 assets. PLAN TO BURN PARIS.

A Munich journal states that Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaris last spring insisted that Germany ought to sue for peace because the situation was then favourable and

postponement

might be dangerous. The poi- tion taken up by Prince Rap- prech: deeply angered General Ludendorf, who broke of Prince Rupprecht's offensive. Later on the journal says, it was re- solved to destroy Paris. At General Headquarters were a number of incendiary shells of a new pattern. The intention was that aeroplanes should drop these shells over Paris, and it was reckoned that in this way at least a fourth part of Paris would be destroyed by fite. But Prince Rupprecht offered anergetic re sistance to this plan, end succeed- fed in hindering the execution of

such a desperate attempt. Reuter.

CHINESE GOVERNMENT TO FINANCE MEAN, UNHEALTHY HOUSES, 14 325,000 houses were built by the end of 1919 we should just make good the shortage created by the war, and the pre- war abortage would remain, said Mr. Benjamin Seebohm Rowntree at the Society of Arts recently, Since the beginning of 1915 only 50,000 houses bad been built compared with

average anraber of 75,000 from 1904 to | 1914. Many fural dwellings were pufit for habitation, and agricultural workers who joined the colours having been thoroughly shaken out of their rats, if not satisfied with their prospects,

would seek work ia towns or emigrate. Sooner than pay a very heavy rent, urban workmen would go further out, and it was not a disadvantage to dwell in the suburbs Adegnate transit was however, necessary, and he recommended the study of Bel-
