SHANGHAI DOOTYARD.
Last year America ordered four vessels of a large type to be bailt in the Kiangnan Dockyarde in Shanghai, supplied the capital necessary for the extension of the docks and for the purchase of materials, and, through loans, planned practically to control the dockyards. Recently, the dock- yard company applied for a temporary loan of Yen 800,000. to prepare for the construction of the four vessels and the govern- ment (Peking) has ordered the Department of Communications to furnish the money..
BRUNSWICK'S ODD RULERS.
The Berlin correspondent of the Cologne Folkszeitung malic iously calls attention to the com». position of the Brunswick Gor- ernment and says:-"The First! President is a jobbing tailor; the Second President is a juggler, who used autil the outbreak of the revolution to give perfor- mances in the Cafe Maxim; and the Minister of Worship is a wo man who can hardly read or write, and who was dismissed for embezzlement from the National Women's Association in

A 16 year old boy was one of those who recently received the O..B. E medal at Westminster | Guildhall In making the presentations, the Duke of Bedford said they were awarded for deeds quite as heroic as some performed on the battlefield. The boy, Harold Kerridge, of Mount Pleasant-road, Tottenham, was in the drawing office of an Edmonton factory when he heard the hissing of burning powder. Knowing that the fire might resch the
be, explosives at great personal riak, seized hose and extinguished it. Mr. Geo. P. Bentley, of Kew Bridgeroad, Brentford; who was given the medal for endeavouring to help the occupants of a house demolished by a bomb, declined some time ago a gift of War Bonds subscribed for by the Metropolitan police and special constables, saying that he had only done his daty. A school teacher, Miss E. W. Watkins, who showed great presence of mind when a bomb fell on a Poplar school in June 1917, and burst in her class room, was also decorated,

proposed reduction of the staff. Due of the clerks whose engage- ment was terminated had served at Suvla Bay with the Royal Fusiliers, and the Food Control Committee proposed to promote in his place a temporary clerk of military age, who had not been in the Army. When the girl clerks heard of these arrangements they promptly left work, and the soldier clerk has now been reic- stated. "It was due to a mis- understanding," said an official of the committee. "The whole. of the staff are working as usual, and no further action is neces-
sary.

hard's Bush, and various parts
of North London, the number of applicants is likely to be very great. It is not expected, bow ever, that the officials will be unable to deal with them all, as. demobilisation has been proceed- fing gradually A Daily Chronicle representative who visited the Employment Exchange in Acton recently found a queue of women waiting to register. The doors were closed and they were admitted in turn, Thousands of women were employed at the great shell factory at Park Royal, and at Shepherd's Bush a large number of women were employed in the making of canip kit, gas masks, and so on. Some of the applicants at the Acton Exchange wore well-made fur coats. AL- though householders are applying daily for domestic servants these exmunitionzers refuse to consider posis AS generals cooks even at tempting wages. **If wa, want into service,” said one of the applicants to our re- presentative, "we should be out of the swing of it all, and never know when there were any good jobs going. If we get some kind of work that doesn't mean living in we can keep in touch with the Exchange. At the Acton Ex- uumerotis change, the most vacancies, apart from those which are purely domestic, are for waitresses, who are argently wanted for London restaurants, for sorters and postwomen for the Christmas season, for grocers' RJ- sistants, and for laundry workers.

SHIPS LIKE CUBIST PICTURES. It has now been disclosed that the man who invented the idea of camouflaging merchant ships to cheat the submarines was Lient.-Commander Wilkinson, and recently he related at Barlington House his system of "dazzling
he painting, as called it, whereby the vessels at ses looked like the product of a cubist artist. Over 3,000 ships were so treated during the latter months of the war, with
It excellent results.
was practical impossibility to achieve invisibility, he said. The real to object was conceal the vessel's course from the submarine. By means of bread stripes of blue black and grey, extending over the whole length of the ship, the bridge, the chart house, the masts and the funnel, Lieut. Commander Wilkinson set to work to break up the entire ourline and form of the ship, so that it was almost impossible to discern the bow of a vesselfrom its atern, or the direction of its course. The dazzle art, however, has not come to the end of its utility. Lieutenant-Commander Wilkin- sen is now preparing colour schemes that will reverse the effects hitherto achieved, and accentuate the outline and direct- ion of a vessel, In is believed by the inventer risks of collisions will be considerably reduced.
BONUS FOR WAR PENSIONERS. In consideration of the high cost of living-it has been decided by the War Cabinet, it was announced recently, that for the period from November 1 last to June 30 next a war bonus of 20 per cent. shall be added to the ordinary war pensions (granted for disablement or death due to war service) of disabled men and their children, and the widows and children of fallenmen. The in- crease will apply to treatmentsad training allowances for families, and also to those for inen them- salves, except men in institutions who pay only the nominal sum of 7a. a week for their mainten- ance. With certain restrictions it will also apply to dependents' pensions. The bonus will not apply to alternative pensions; but a widow may be allowed to draw ordinary pension and allow- ances for her children if and while the bonus makes the total: higher than the amount of alter- native pension. Detailed regula tions will be published shortly. Application to the Ministry of Pensions is not necessary.
