of big ships in country is to put the United States abreast of other maritime i nations as far as the passenger carrying trade is concerned. The Tashona No. 36. . ships that have been planned would add to the prestige of the United States on the seas and would enable the United States to bid on even terms for Trans- atlantic -passenger business. Plans thus far advanced contem- plate ships of the Lusitania class. That would mean vessels of about 800 feet in length, with a gross tonnage of about 35,000. They would have a speed of 25 or 26 knots. Larger passenger ships Tjimarock
Tilpanas
Tjikini
have been built, such as the Waterland, now the American transport Leviathan. The Levis- than is 950 feet long, and has a gross tonnage of 54.300. But it is not yet contemplated to build vessels of this class. Ships approximat ing the Lusitania in size and speed would cost about $15,000, 000 each, so that a fleet of five would represent an outlay of $75,000,000. It would take two years to complete such ship from the time of lay.

SHIPPING ACCIDENTS, Owing to the boisterons weather in the north, many shipping accidents are reported. While the Echigo-maru (1,200 tons), a steamer chartered by the Chosen Yusen Kaisha, was on a course near the north coast of Korea, on her homeward voyage from Vladivostok, she was overtaken by a blizzard about 5 p.m. on New Year's Day. As a result she was driven out of her course and stranded. Fortunately all tha
passengers were brought safely to land. Two other strand- ings are reported, both from Kushiro, in the Hokkaido.
