Hartnell, who was chief officer of the ill-fated steam- mer Brussels, and was taken prisoner with the late Captain Fryatt, has recently wrinen to the secretary of the Imperial Merchant Service Guild, of which society he is a member from his home in Parkeston, Essex. After thanking the Guild for the various parcels received from them whilst he was in the hands of the Germans, Mr. Hartnell goes on to say that he was in Bruges prison along with Captain Fryatt uctil he was done to death by his cap- ors, and for some little time aft- erwards. At the present time the yard is engaged on the construct- ion of four ships of about 4,000 tons each, and all of these have been sold. In addition, the com- pany has entered into contracts for a number of steamers, a period. for the delivery of which extands well into the year 1923. The smooth progress of work at the present time is largely de- pendent upon successes in secur- ing the necessary materials. The company intends to adopt the standard system which is so large- ly followed in England and America
