14th May that the Marshal of the

Vice Admiralty Court proceeded to

execute the Warrant which had

been issued. About 6 o'clock

the same evening the affair was first brought to

my notice

by the Acting French Consul and others who waited on me at

Government House, and after

the interview had ended, I sent

Fortunately that Officer,

on hearing what had taken place, brought with him the Despatches of Your Lordship's Predecessor, Nos. 81 and 82, of the 8th February and

11th May, 1849, respectively, which lay down the privilege of exteroption

to which the French Mail Steamers

are entitled, so that I was at

once enabled to decide

on the course of action which should

be taken. Before 7 P.M. I had sent for Mr. Adayllar, the Acting
