Why not a Public Defender?

At present we have a Director of Pablic Proscations. The necessary corollary is a Public

Defender. Why should we not

bave one? The question wAS discussed recently at a luncheon 悲紧 the Imperial Restaurant, R-gent-eireet, when Mr. J. A. 8 ddox, an ex-president of the Trade Union Congress, presided. There is already a Pablic Defender in the United States, and Mr. H. B. Irving, the Rev. R J. Campbell, Mr. Cecil Chapman, and Sir A. Con Doyle wrote approvingly of the scheme. Mr. Seddon's only comment was Why has it never been thought of before 2.

Music not a Luxury.

F

M Landon Ronald, speaking at the prize giving at the Guild. hall School of Music recently said for the past 20 yeare no batter antinal education was to be had anywhere in Europe or America than was to be got in London. But he was the first to admit that; musical education abroad was ss; good and very much chearer. That was because music was supported by every Government. in Europe excepting our own. We in England had yet to admit that music was a necessity and emphatically, not a luxury."
