Put briefly, the argument was that if a sailing yacht can be driven at a speed of 14 knots 700ft sailing ship cult to make at least 28 knots under favourable conditions. Of. course this is a matter of specul- ation, but a well-known writer admitted, in an American Ships ping paper, that a 20 krot sailer could be built. It is qu te possible that, by this time, some of America's big air and seven masted coasting schooners may bave logged 20 knots for a short distance. These strange-looking craft have frequently.
