£4,600 was granted in aid of a small sum (1833. 6. been 8 8) which was subscribed by the Community for the work. Most unfortunately, though perhaps arising from ignorance of what would naturally follow, the wood used in building the present structure, I should have declined giving my sanction to the expenditure being defrayed out of the public funds, for I consider that it would more properly have been met by a call on that portion of the Community which frequents the Cathedral.

Consequently, it is now found that a considerable sum is required to put it in the state which I have mentioned. The Cathedral is the property of the Colony, and it is the only place of worship for the Troops who belong to the Church of England. Nevertheless, were it a question of small repairs or of beautifying a work of necessity, arising out of the short-sighted economy of those who built the Cathedral many years ago.
