For some time past fears have been entertained as to the stability of the roof of the Cathedral; and after examination by the Acting Surveyor General there can be no doubt that the ravages of white ants are throughout the wood work so extensive as to render its entire renewal an absolute necessity. I enclose a copy of Mr. Me Cardy's report.

It was, after consulting Executive Council, that I decided on submitting for a vote of money the application to the Legislative Council. It was, however, passed with two dissenting voices - the one of Mr. Ryrie who thought the Military Authorities of the Imperial Government should subscribe towards such an unforeseen expenditure, and the other, of Mr. Whittall who objected on the ground that when subscribing for the Church he had been informed that the roof of the Cathedral was sound and would not require renewing for ten years.

There is, I think, much to commend the matter to Your Lordship's favourable consideration. The Cathedral was built in 1847, when by Ordinance No. 2 of that year...
