IMPORTANT, SUCCESSES IN THE WEST,
London, Oct 28.
An American official message says Boisbelleu is entirely in our hands.
Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig says: A determined counter-attack made on the 27th on Famers was repulsed: after street fighting in which many of the enemy were killed. We sightly improved our positions on the borders of Mormal Forest and northward of Raismes Forest
Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reporta: As the result of a local operation southward of Valenciennes we advanced our line between Rhönelle River and the Schelde in face considerable opposition and prisonered one hundred Our aviators on Sunday" dropped 19} tods" of bombs, shot down sixteen enemy machines and drove down ten. Eleven British are missing.
Reuters correspondent with the French Arms, wiring on the 27th inst, states that the Hunding line, broken by frontal attack from the south and tarned by the progress. of the First French Army from the west, has been abandoned by the enemy. Tonight the front runs from Vadencourt on the Oise to Mortiers on the Serre, passing a mile west of Guise The German army in front of General Debeney, is in retreat and the whole German line between Chateau Por- cies and Argonne is in-danger of being turned General Debeney's indefatigable infantry have broken the three river line, which is the last water line the enemy commands be tween his present front and the Meuse..
A French communique says: Between the Oise and the Serre we are keeping in close contact with the enemy rear- guards. We continued our progress at night tüne We occupied Lamotte farm, west of Guise, and reached the west- cra approaches of Leberie-la-Vieville. We passed Monceau- le-Neuf and reached the western outskirts of Pargay-les-Bois. On the Serre front we carried Hill 123, north :of £recy, Farther cast we gained a fouting in the enemy trenches north of Frojdmons and Cohartille when we maintained our posi- tiens despite counter-attacks. East of Nethel Americani units brilliantly carried out a local operation in which they advanced about a kilometre in the region of the forest and farm east of Attigny. We prisonered 172, including four officers. We have captured numerous prisoners and cop- siderable material. The prisoners captured by the First Army since the 24th number 700." The booty in the same period includes twenty guns and several hundreds of machine-guns. The Tenth Army is co-operating with the First Army on the Serre front and is vigorously pushing the enemy north- wards. We occupied Crecy-sur-Serre. In the fighting of the last two days we have obliged the enemy to alyndum part of the Hunding position between Herpy and Recouvrance. We are following on the heels of the enemy.
THE PLIGHT OF THE TURKS.
Pariz, Oct. 25,
M
A message from Athens states that the last remnants of the Turkish army are concentrating at Bulair.and will. use Chatalja as a second line for the defence of Constanti nuple.
-"Loudoo, Oct. 28.
-4 Mesopotamia oficial message' says the Turks on the ith held the strong position" on the Jebeihamrin westward of the mouth of the Lesser Zar. Armoured cars attacked the lines of communication from the west while.cavalry threatened those from the east. Frontal pressure combined with these actacks compelled the Turks to retreat for twelve miles. We are keeping in close contact. We captured Kirkuk on the 25th. It is reliably stated that British armoured cars. have cut the Turks' line of communications from Sherchat to Mosul. The rife strength of the Turks south of Kirkuk is about eight thousand. The British forces are much larger but no big coup is to be expected at present owing to the badness of communications
INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC AT HOME.
London, Oct 23.
The severity of influenza in London, the country and in Ireland is unabated. Some schools are closing down. The mortality is increasing though it is not, exceptionally high. A conference of bacteriologists has unanimously re- commended inoculation as a preventive or effective curative influence.
