present the supply seems fully equal to the demand, and dry docks on the Atlantic coast have been employed as construction basins for new tonnage. This certainly seems a luxurious method of bui'ding. Work proceeds on an even keel and no launching takes place. The water is simply pumped into the dock and the vessel floats out.

Quick Shipbuilders.

Five minutes after the model fabricated ship was launched from.. the Wallsend yard of Messra. Swan "Hunter and Wigham Richardson, the keel of a 10,000- tra standard vessel was laid on the vacated berth. Almost before the ship went off the first keelson plate wes put in position. Two large new berths has been con- structed at the Fard of the North- umberland Shipbuilding Com- pany, Howdon. The scheme involved the construction of a new river frontage of piling and the reclamation of the land behind. Full presersion of the site w only obtained on April 11, but the work was so well organised that the keel of the first vessel was laid on April 18, and the second keel on July 16. Both vessels will be launched before the end of the year. The work involved the excavation of 24,000

tons of earth, the driving of be- tween 600 and 700 piles of steal and timber, the construction of 300 cubic yards of reinforced concrete. and the erection of 300 tons of steelwork.
