London, Oct. 5.
Striking figures respecting the transport of American troops to Europe show that the total up to Sept 30th was 1,760,000, of whom British ships carried approximately 1,000,000. Seventy per cent of the work of convoying was performed by the British Navy. Daring September 311,000 Americans, 5,000 Canadians and 4,000 American bluejackets were transported to Europe, Half of these September Americans landed in France and the remainder in England. The largest single convoy from the United States came in September. It numbered over 31,000. The previous record was 22,000. The figures emphasise the enormous contribu- tion America is making, the strength of the British Navy and the failure of the much vaunted U-Boat threats to prevent the arrival of the American Army.

An Attempt to Hoodwink,
Washington, Oct. 8. The composition of the new German Cabinet is general- ly interpreted here as a desperate effort by the Prussian militarists to hoodwink the Entente and German people into a belief in the democratization of Germany. It is predicted that Germany is about to make a new peace proposal dis- guised under the most attractive democratic program." It is pointed out however that as the Government is not respon. sible to the Beichstag and Herr Scheidemann and Herr Groeber.are without power without portfolios, the junkers are still in actual control.
