Japanese Ships in America.
It wil be remembered that in May last the United States chartered "22 Japanese vessels, totalling 150,000 tons, at Y.19 on. an average, with a subsidy of Y.7.50 from the Japanese Gov- ernment for ships owned by. [private" concerns, the term o contract running for six months. The contract expires in Novem- ber, when the owners expect to take delivery on the Pacific coast- of America. It is said that the United States desires to recew the contract for another six months, and will make a formal proposal in October. On the other hand, it is reported that the Japanese owners are not in the least, prepared to entertain the proposal, in view of the arrangements that have been already made with reward to the release cf their vessels in November.
