Successes in Elanders

. London, Sept. 20 In Flanders the Belgians hate captured Wercken, east of Dixmade, and are fighting on the outskirts of Staden. Southwards we have reached the railway north of Verbicą, thence, Raverse, nd Lys as far as Warneton which we cap- tured. All the suburbs of Cambrai worth-east and west and south-west have been rapmired. Vlers Guistan las finally been regained, North of St. Quentin we haw broken the Hindenburg line on a front of eight miles and penetrated it for two miles. The British are now, threatening the Busigny-St Quentin railway and the French are threatening the St. Quentin-Rerémont line. Thus St, Quentin is being ouißanked on both sides. The French nate captured one half of Chemin-des-Dames and launched a new attack be- tween the Vesle and the Aisne and progressed roughly to the line from Resillon to Roinain and Montigny and cast- wards to Junchery. In Argonne heavy fighting is proceed- ing. The French hare reached Monthois and captured Mar--

It is probable the enemy will snortly drastically réorganise his front, expecially the Belgian sector and be tween the Scarpe and Oise the enemy must shorten his line. The whole. front between 'Rneims and the sea is in a state of 'Suctuation.

Beuter learns that the Angle Belgians have captured Gheluve and renched two miles from Meniu. In Cambrai sector Blecourt has been re-captured and southwards we Bave crossed the Scheldt and 'captured Crvéncoeur,

The St Quentin-Cambrai Sattle.

London, Oct. 1.

Reuter's correspondent at British Headquarters. wiring on the evening of 30th Sept., says: The battle for St. Quen- tin and Cambrai was resumed to-day ip a bowling wind and slashing rain The enemy brought up Fresh reserves and is resisting desperately, chiefly with machine-guns, owing to the serious consequences of our threat The Canadians north-west of Cambrai attacking along the railway, progress" ed through nee-deep slush but a counter-attack drove them: "back. Later the Canadians re-attacked and carried the ne well north-east of Cambrai. The Australians' eulogy of the performances of the Forty-Sixth Division yesterday after swimming and ferrying across the canal and subsequently prisonering over four thousand, says it has been unique. The Australians say the way the Leicestershire and Derby- shire lads went through and around the bewildered enemy" was the finest performance they have seen in the whole war, As regards the pending enemy retirement between the Scarpe and the Oise it appears the Germans have no strong organised defences to fall back upon. It is difficult to indicate where the enemy line will stabilise for the winter, if indeed it does stabilise..

||

The extreme importance of the sector eastward "of Argonne where the Americans are battling against important German forces is emphasised by Reater's correspondent with the American army. He says the Germans have no delusions respecting the vital importance of this front. - General' Persbing's and General Gourand's armies threaten the enemy's very existence in France, therefore the Germans may be expected to fight here as cowhere else since a break through would compel retirement from the entire front, The enemy is rashing up fresh and untired divisions toward 'Argonne and hurling them headlong into the fight. From the very vigour and urgency of the counter-attacks it is safe to assume that the immediata, stoppage of our progress is deemed imperative.

The Flanders. Advance.

London, Oct. 1. A Belgian communique says: Despite the downpour the. Allies have continued their advance along the whole front. They have carried Amersvelde, Staden and Oostinienwkerke and crossed the Zarren-Roulers Menin road at several points. Considerable booty and dumps of railway material have been captured.

BRITAIN'S WAR EFFORT.-

London, Sept 30

Mr. Bonar Law's speech was made at the Guild Hall where he opened a campaign for raising a second thousand milian sterling,

The Lord Mayor read a letter froin Mr. Lloyd George appealing to the nation to continue its munificent patriotic support of its soldiers and sailers. The Premier wrote: If partial victory be suspended it would be a disaster. We: must put victory through and could not do so unless all did their best ani"gave their utmost.

Mr. Bonar Law declared that it was certain the system of continuous borrowing would succeed üntü, the end of the war. (Cneers). During the past year 1,190 millions sterling in War Boods had been sold. In the first eight months of 1913 the war contributions averaged about twenty-six millions weekly. Referring to. General Allenby's victory Mr Bonar Law said it had already resulted in the destruction of the strongest of the remaining military forces in Turker and had ... already made all the difference in the Caspian and Caucasus Areas. Emphasising the greatness, of Britain's war effort Mr. Bonar Law stated that Britain had lent her Allies sixteen hundred millions sterling and just as America entered -the war we had to mortgage every security we possessed in -order to finance our Allies. Load cheers). He concluded that this was the beginning of the end. (Loud cheers). The Allies ar aims could now-he secured. If there was any danger it was not on the battle fronts. (Loud cheers).

PRESIDENT WILSON AND FEMALE SUFFRAGE.

Washington, Oct. 1. President Wilson, addressing the Senate, urged the extension of the suffrage to women as ritally essential to the successful prosecution of the war. He said that plain, struggling work-a-day folk were convinced that the epief terror and suffering of this tragic war had befallen women. Therefore he demanded that women folk shall participate i in affairs alongside men on as equal footing.

The war

could not be fought successfully without the services of women in every sphere, even upon the" skirts of the battle. itself. We need their moral sense to preserve what is right; Without their connseilings we would only be half-wise babes,

GERMAN CHANCELLOR'S RESIGNATION,
