“Saven" Battles to Fall Splög, and

London, Sept 98 With the outburst of the Belgian blaze seven battles in which four million men are engaged are now raging between. the North Sea and Nazareth. Our week end achievements include the capture of fifty important toëns and positions. sad forty thousand prisoners. Marshal Foch's tactics in tackling the thorny problem of Chemin des Dames are grest- ly puzzling the Germans. Instead of frontal attacks be is advancing along botn sides of the knife-edged ridge leaving the Germans no choice but to retire along it. Similar tacties - wern-most successful in Argonne where the enemy holding the forest had to retire to keep his alignment with General Gourand on one side and the Americans on the other. The capture of Dismude and Moorslede "Ridge is most im- portant. Dixmade, a formidable position on the Ypres. canal commanding the road to Dunkirk, resisted all efforts of the Belgians to re-capture it after their retreat from.. Ostende The operations involved the crossing of swamps in addition to the canal bat this region of death traps is now in the rear of the Allies. The captore of Moorslede Ridge is even more significant as the extension of the victory will mean the breaking of the main bulwark of the German extreme right. In any case our gun positions on the heights. take the German coast positions in the rear while Datch telegrams speak of an anprecedented British naval bombard. ment of "Zeebrugge, etcetera. The populace of Flushing spent the night on the dykes watching the awe-inspiring *pectacle.

Lively artillerying took place between the Ailette and Aisne. There was no infan- try fighting last night in Champagne, where the battle was re- newed at dawn to-day

Further west we captured Mont Fauxelles and Vieux and carried our lines to the southern outskirts of Aure. On the left we penetrated Sainte Mariepy.

A Belgian communique on the 99th saya: During to-day the Belgian army and the British army under General Plumer continued their success, beating the enemy after a severe. fight on the whole of the great Flanders Ridge also the whole of the Messines-Wytscharte position The Belgian army captured Dismude, Zarron, Terest, Stadenberg, West- roosebeke and Moorslede. It repulsed strong counter-attacks Between Staden and Terest and by, the end of the day it as attacking the Roulers-Menin road at St. Pieter also at Colliemolenhock, four kilometres west of Roulers. Gen- eral Plumer's army, after capturing the Messines-Wytschaete "ridge, encountered very strong resistance. The enemy rainly attempted to defend the approaches to Lys and suffered very heary lossed especially in Ploerschaede wood. By the end of the day General Plumer's army had passed the eastern outskirts of Ploogsteer wood. Gapahrd, St. Tom- prielen, Teshånd and Dadtzeele. During the 8th and 29th the Belgian army and General Plumer's army had taken over nine thousand prisoners and over two hundred guns, including some 240 and 250 millimeter guns, also a consider able quantity of material. General Plumer's army had taken 65 officers and 3,000 men, also ninety field guns. The British sir service contributed very powerfully to the success of the operations by bombing incessantly the enemy's columns, trains and lines of communication.

The Press Bureau states that Sir Douglas Haip has heartily congratulated the King of the Belgians and the Belgian army on the magnificent results they have achieved

The British Captures,

"Loudon, Sept. 30. "Field Marsnal Sir Douglas Haig reports: Aorthward of Baiut Quehun on Sunday the forty-sixth North Midland invision captured four thousang prisoners and forty guns. „ que enemy's resistance was obstinate between Bellicourt Bud treuelled. The American, Australian and English woops bad hervy fighting until night but, despite strong opposition, gamned ground and took many prisoners. Counter" attacks pressed us back slightly to the western outskirts of Bony and Villers Mouistam We--maintained our "gains elsewhere and reprogressed northward of Gonnellen in the direction of Les-rue-de-Vignes, Heavy fighting on the left: battle-front compelled our advanced troops to withdraw trom -Aubeacheslanbac and drieux : The enemy was unable to prevent our progress westward and north-westward of Cambraiand Bapaum-Cambrai roads and we entered the north- erii suburbs of the town. We repulsed determined counter- attacks in this sector and inflicted heavy losses. Heavy rain tell at night-time and it is still stormy.

We captured Bellenglise, Le Haucourt and Magny-la-Fosse, Further north at the same hour New York, Tennessee, “North and South Carolina troops under Major-General Read attacked the Hindenburg lines on a front of five thousand yards where the canal passes through a tunnel. The Amer- icans pressed forward in dushing style and captured Belli- court and Nauroy," On the left bank fighting proceeds in the neighbourhood of Bony. In the centre the British cap- tured Villers Guislain. The New Zealanders aleared Welsh Ridge, breaking up a hostile counter-attack, and captured", Lavacquerin and the spur between Bomaris and Masnieres,, Meanwhile the Sixty-second 'Division secured the canal crossings and continued their advance, and captured Mas "nieres, Learnesvertes and the defensive system covering

Mare French Progress.

London, Sept 30

A French communique saya: South of St Quentin we attacked on the front from Urvillers to Cerizy and ejected the desperately resisting enemy from these villages which are in our possession. Between the Ailette and Aiste we

On the Champagne front our troops in following up attacks obtained important results and captured, on their right, Bouconville thus enlarging their positions » north thereof. Westwards we carried Mont Curelet despite bitter enemy resistance. The Franch, pushing northwards, carried Sechault and advanced two kilometres beyond in the direc tion of Challerange.

G
