THE FIGHTING IN FRANCE.

Pursuit of the Enemy Continues”

ሰ. London, Sept. 2.

A French communique says: North of the Aisne toe purauit was" continued during the night. We occupied the forest of Pinos and reached Arlette in this region, also cast of Chavignon. On the Ostelchayon front the enemy is lively, resisting our advance. In Champagne violent attacks launched by the enemy yesterday were broken and we resumed our progress particålarly north of Gratreuil where we took possession of Bellevue Heights.

A

First Fruits of the Combined Wifensive.

London, Dept 24. Beuter's correspondent at French tienaquarters, tele- graphing on the sto at mine in the evening, says: The whole enemy iront from St. questi to Betis has become a salient the bases of which are being vigorously attacked from both sides. On both wings the enemy is tightang with the energy of despair. The enemy began to retreat of the trent of Laffaux-Malmaison plateau from which Chemin-des-Dames runs eastward to Craunne and touches Ailette. As tuc result of General Mangin's advance yesterday the whole of Mal- maison plateau and the western end of Chemin-des-Dames for about fifteen hundred yards are in our possession. The enemy is here, after 5ghting desperately for weeks to keep tnam, abandoning the approaches to the massif of St. Gobain and Laon platean, that is the group of heights which for four years has formed the centraf pillar of his tine in France. The strategy of Marshal Foch compels him, as it did on the Mazue, to withdraw his centre before the Allies' attack north and east forced him to withdraw on the wings. This retreat is the first fruit of the Franco-Angio-American. offensive of the last three days.

# The Anglo-Belgian Attack.

Paris. Sept 29.

A despatch from the Belgian front says that King Albért. " commanded the Belgian and Second British Armies whica attacked on a front of thirteen miles between south of Ypres and Lake Blankaert. After carrying the first German pos tions and Houthulst Forest they assaulted in Flanders the Billy forming the second German position.

The Haul of Prisoners.

Lunanu, Sept. 29. Since 15th July the Allies have taken over two hundred thousand prisoners, three thousand guns, twenty thousand machine-guns and auge quantities of material. This does not include prisoners taken in Palestine, Macedonia and Mesopotamia

German Admissions.

London, Sept. 2.

A wireless German official message says; Augio- Belgians attacked from southward of Dixmade as far as Wurverghem, captured our crater positions and in places advanced into our artillery lines. We held Wytschäete heights against repeated attacks. We withdrew westward of Cambra: owing to the loss of the canal position Astride Marquion we withdrew behind the Dise-Aisne canal between Anizy-le Chateau and Bourg. The French captured Hommepy. We withdrew in Argonne as far as Recon, south-eastward of Binarville and south-westward of Apremont. The Americans pressed us back as far as Cunel wood and Caya.”

Cambrai at Our Feet.

London, Sept. 29. .... On Saturday morning the Canadians, after crossing the Nord Canal, expected heavy ngnting, but were genuinely dia- gusted to find the Germans had bolted beyond effective ritle range Cambrai how lies at our feet and is dominated by field-guns. The appearance of American infantry at the other end of the battle-field must have been a nasty sur- prise as the enemy would 'scarcely expect the "dough boys""" so far from the Woevre. Prisoners report the greatest con- fusion among the enemy reserves who are hopelessly scatter- ed and mixed with other units. There is a continuous stream of enemy transport eastward also fires behind the German. lines. It is impossible yet to tell how far the latter is caused ed by our artillary. Great masses of our troops rested at night-time in the capacious solters of the. Hindenburg systeem.

Another German Report.

London, Sept. 20

A wireless German message issued in the evening saya Fresh engagements have occurred eastward of Ypres also tremendous fighting between Cambrai, and St. Quentin, the English assault failing on the whole. There have been violent Franco-American attacks in Champagne and between Argonne
