THE NEW ALLIED ATTACKS.
“Enmmating the St. Mihiel Sabent,
PRETATIK London, Sept. 11 Houter's correspondant at American Headquarters, telegraphing on the evening of the 19th, says: The St. Mihiel salient created by the Germans at considerable cost. is in a fair way to be eliminated. As far as the operations have gone a more complete success could hardly have been obtained, the double objectives laid down for the day's ad- vance being reached well in advance of the expected hour, The evidence of prisoners confirms belief that a general re- tirement to the Hindenburg line is contemplated, but if that is his intention the enemy has lost a surprising number of men in carrying it out. The attack was timed: from the southern side at five in the morning." After & four hours'- bombardment the troops started in mist and rain, and heavy rainstorms occurred at intervals making the progress of heavy guns and transport difficult. Though the weather is" most inconvenient it is unlikely to influence the complete execution of the objective of the present operations, which are of an extremely limited nature. For twelve miles the main southern attack extended eastward, past Mont Sec, ́s great natural fortress twelve hundred feet high dominating this saction, practically to Pont-a-Mousson. The "Germans" are busy getting their guns away after the bombardment.. They offered the weakest support to the infantry. Our" scroplanes did splendid work swooping down on retiring" infantry, driving every German plane from the air and bringing down in flames several balloons. A good des! of our fire was directed at Thiancourt, the first important town in the advance. A tremendous explosion was observed there. and the town was in flames shortly after. It is expected that the present total of prisoners taken at St. Mikiel will be largely increased. The line runs from Pagny où the Moselle (in enemy hands) thence in a straight line cestwarda to Hattonville, along the foot of the Mouse heights. Our line is consequently shortened from forty to under twenty miles. The operation was a purely local one and has been most sucessful All the objectives were attained. The 1 chemy left a good 1ailway from Thiaucourt to St. Mihiel in our hands and most of the villages captured were undamaged.
A Fine Attack.
Paris, Sept. 14. Interviews with the Franco-American wounded show that the Franco-Americans displayed magnificent dash. Some regiments #assaulted singing the "Marseillaise" and "with their flags Aying. The principal German strongholds were carried with the bayonet. After a desperate struggle, an officer relates, a French, detachment got into dificulties in a wood whereupon Americans, without waiting for orders, spontaneously dashed forward, surrounded the wood and billed all the enemy machine-gunners at their posta.
The Alemen's Role.

The Air Ministry reports: In conjunction with the American attack we, on the night of the 19th, heavily bomb ed the railways at Metzsablon and Courcelles, with good results. We machine-gurned Metz station and searchlights and bombed, Metasablon and other rail junctions and trans- port on the 19th, dropping seven and half tons of bombs with good results. We destroyed one hostile machine, Two British are missing.

The great enthusiasm in Britain over the successes of the Americans at Saint Mihiel is evidenced by the beflagging of, Liverpool yesterday on the arrival of American troops. The streets were lined with cheering crowds.
The papers in London express unstinted admiration of the American victory which is described as one of the great- est Allied "coups" of the war, wresting at a single blow the Avantage ground held by the Germans for four years and proving that the tremendous force of the United States is Deginning to tell earlier than antepated. It is pointed out that nothing is more likely to open the eyes of the German nation to the overwhelming and decisive character of the new factor emerging in the war than the remarkable timph alicet instantly "lamed by a powertul American army directed by an American general.
In this connection the papers are unanimous in describ ing von Peyer's peace terms as evidence that Germany has already lost the illusion of a decisive - victory, :ridiening the Kaiser's Essea speech which Mr. Garainer in the "Dairy, News" describes as "the death rate of despotism, & con- fession that, Germany is beaten” Mr. Garamer declares that peace on the lines of Von Fayer's proposals would be a crime. The papers. are confidem that the American victory at Saint Mikiel, will hasten the disappearance of tus illusion In Germany that they can, retain their eastern conquests.
