French correspondente on General Byng's front describe an epic fight at night when there was a great clash of Ger mine and British with bayunet and hand grenades in the light of some flaming tanks whose petrol was burning as the result of shell-fire. "Sparts of fame ninety feet high light up 'hundreds of airmen who despite torrential rain machine-gun the enemy, while thousands of men are engaged in s deadly, bloody grapple." Two German divisions here were positively annihilated. The ground was strewn with thousands upon thousands of bodies. "It was a gigantic tragedy, ending
finally in utter defeat for the enemy.".
80,000 Prisoners in a Fortnight.
London, Aug. 27.
A Havas message states: The Journal des Debats" writes on the subject of the German retreat: "The Gorman army in retreat is suffering from a serious crisis regarding man power. Till September, when the new class is called to the colours, Ludendorf is trying to gain time. This is why he decided upon the retreat; but in doing so he loses all the results of the offensive of the 1918 campaign. He loses also material and men. In three days from Rist to 23rd. August the two armies of Generals Byng and Rawlinson. took fourteen thousand prisoners. The total taken in the last fortnight by the Allies is about 80,000 men. The opera- tion therefore is disastrous for the enemy,
Triumph in View:
Londen, Aug. 27. The French Premier, M. Triumph is in view. The co-operation of all towards world renovation will achieve a work of idealism towards which so many gén- erations have so gloriously striven and which history has reserved for us the inexpressible lack of realising."
