War's Effect on Goldfields. The effect of the rise of prices #nd wage doring the War is be ing felt seriously by the Witwater strand Goldfield. Fourteen of the low grade minée (comprising 25 per cent. of the industry) earned barely enough to cover expenses. Some of them are now actually carried on et a loss. The overage cost of working has riser 20 per cent. Letween August, 1914, and August, 1917, that is from 18/8 to 20/- per ton milled.

Mesere. Wheelock & Co.'s fort nightly freight market circolar, issued Jaly 18, states:-The situation in our freight market ie' 88 follows:-To United King dom: No change. To France: -There have been a few Japanese steamers loading here lately for Marseilles and there are more to follow. A certain amount of cargo has been sbioped by them at the rate of 1300/- a ton leas 10 per cent rebate for general cargo, bat the rate is to prohibitive that shippers are finding it increasing. difficult to do besines at that!

Rates are firm by the Trade Pacific Freight Boreku Lines, owing to the strong demand from the South for space and Philippine Islands Coastwire-There is a strong demand for tocnage in market. especially from Northern Porte, Dairen loading being in great request; and the bea movement of cargo from River Ports still continue. Although the Hongkong maket has eased up lately is does not seem to bav3 had any effect on the rates for steamers on time charter, judg ing from the fixture reported recently of a 3,500 ton sleamer at the record rate of Mex. $43.00 per ten dead weight per month for a period of twelve months.
