Church Claim to Make Its Own Appointments.

Prime Ministers in the past have taken gress trouble and, care in the appointment of Bishops, said the Bishop of London at a meeting if the Church Baform Leègue st Queen's Hall. But, while the Church was ab established body there was justification for the leading layman having a voice in nominating the Bishoga. Bishopa were important pèrsons in the State, and it was only reasonable” that the State should bare a voice in electing them.

The Bishop of Oxford suggest ed the appointment of a sort of |commission, such as existed in the time of Charles 11. and William IIL, whereby Secretaries of State should not move until the commission had given their [recommendation. They wanted

so arrangement by which the.. Prime Minister should know what was the feeling of a lidoers in regard to a proposed appointment.

the Premier, in order to maintain A resolution was passed geking

harmonious co-operation between Church and State, to appoint a small commission of Churchmen to asist in the exercise of the Crown's soolesiastical patronage.
