Port of London Authority
Employees.
At a meeting of the Port of London Authority employees recently the following resolution was passed"This meeting of Port of London Authority em- ployees representing the whole of the Authority, emphatically protests against the statement made by Lord Devosport that no request bas come from their employees for a standard war wage of 8d per hour over pre war rates. Our demands have alware been based on standard hourly rates, but never conceded by the' Autherity on that basis. At our unanimous request the Executive Council of our union bave asked the National Transport Workers' Federation to endeavour to bring this about. We hope the Govern ment will not allow the Port of London Authority, at the present crisis in the country, to-goad us into revolt, but you will compe the Authority to honour any national award that may be given by the Committee on Production for general cargo workers. We," on our side, agree to abide loyally by any award that may be given." Shipbuilding Yard for. Newport ?

Mr. John Moron, the deputy Mayor of Newport. at the recent annual meeting of the Newport Chamber of Trade, stated they had tried to get a nati nal shipbuilding yard at Newport, but their efforts had not been Buocessful. He stated, however, that they had succeeded in getting a firm to take a site for shipbuilding yarde, and work would be commenced as soon as the authorities could be prevailed upon to give permission to proceed with the work. It is reported that the company are backed by considerable espital. Inquiries, however, as to the firm who intend to lay down yards at Newport were not successful in their results. There is consider- able secrecy with regard to this mattor, and it is hoped that something definite will be done at the port in connection with shipbuilding, for the same secrecy regarding a firm who were coming to Cardiff, to lay down modern shipbuilding yards prevailed in the Welsh metropolis. for months. Apparently the scheme at Cardiff has been definitely abandoned for no further reference has been made to the matter for some time..

A case somewhat out of the' ordinary occurred some little time ago in respect to the Board of Trade scheme for compensation for loss of effects. The circum- stances of the case were follows: Some considerable time ago a merchant ship was affacked by a submarine, and a running fight followed, which lasted for about an hour and a half, and it was claimed by those in the merchant ship that the submarine was sunk by a direct hit. Unfor tunately, just before this lucky shot took effect, a shell from the submarine burst on the bridge of the merchant ship, killing the captain, one officer, and the belmsman. This was the only important damage which the ship received, awing largely to the masterly manner in which she was handled during the action. She was eventually got safely into port, and the bodies of those who had lost their lives were interred with full honours. The captain's effects were duly landed at this port and eventually senti home, but, anfortunately, the vessel in which they had been shipped was sunk la torn by an enemy submarine and the effects were lost. The widow on being informed of this made a claim on the authorities, who would not, nader, the circumstances, admit liability, and eventually the case was placed in the hands of the Imperial Merchant Service
husband had been a very old and respected member. Guild have been successful in obtaining half the. amount due on the policy. The widow is naturally very pleased at the turn events bave taken since placing the matter in the hands of of the Guild, and writes as follows:...telling me they will pay me £50, which I should never bave received had it not been for your kindness in taking the matter up for me. Will you please accapt my heartfelt thanks and gratitude for taking so much trouble?"
