From return 1=4
it would appear that
Nearly $50,000 were spent during the Summer on
works
and other services for which there
was no provision in the Estimates for this year;
I shall defer expressing any opinion on the large
number of items contained in this Return until I am in receipt of the Estimates for 1872, which I
have to request may be sent as
soon as possible,
after the accounts of the year have been completed,
and will be accompanied by further explanation as to the necessity for this expenditure.
