THE LATEST GERMAN THRUST.

No Surprise for the Allies.{

London, June 10

There is no element of surprise at the renewal of the. German offensivo. The sector chosen is between Noyon and Monididier as was anticipated in the reviews of export opinion recently cabled. The principal objective is the fanwas town of Compeigue, between which and Noyon the country is densely wooded, but the ultimate objective is obviously Paris. The French line covering the capital forms a salient from Montdidier to Troesnes on the Ourcq with an extension thence to the Marne at Essome. Inside the salient the main military centre is Compeigne, while Villers Cotterit is a subsidiary contre. All this fortified territory, which is the chief remaining bulwark to the capital, consiste of detached masses of rising ground lying across the bead of the Dize valley and containing the great road and railway to Paris. The line is vital and in defending it the Albea are defending the very heart of France. There is little space for retreat and the French and British armies will have to bear the weight of the battle, but both are still unbroken and every confidence is felt that General Foch will have a counter blow which perhaps, as a French writer says, will make Paris a gigantic Verdun and the tomb of the Ger man army and its cause. It is expected that the fighting will be protracted, for the battle may be extended north or south by other desperate German attacks...

Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig says: There is nothing except reciprocal artillerying in different sectors.

A wireless German official message states: Our attack penetrated the hilly district south westward of Noyon and captured the French positions westward of Metz, near Mortemer and Orvillers. We advanced beyond Cauvilly and Rioquebourg. We fought through Ricquebourg and La Motte Woods and threw back the enemy beyond Bour- thont and Mareail. We penetrated far into Thiescourt Wood in the neighbourhood of Lassigny and took prisoner 8,000.

Encouraging Reports.

London, June 30 Beuter's correspondient at French Headquarters, wiring on the evening of the 9th says: Latest reports from the battle-field are encouraging. The French are fighting with great bravery and tenacity. Right and left of the battle ares the enemy, despite his most powerful efforts, is unable to make progress beyond the advanced position technically called the covering zone which is swept by the fire of his Minenwerfer.

"The Signs are Good,“

Paris, June 10.

We had accumulated fortifications on the front of the

It was thus a veritable forcing of a heavily forti alteck ted tront that yun Hutier's eighteenth German army had. Lo undertake yesterday. It had to attack in three directions, firstly, on both banks of the Cise in the direction of Com- piegas in order to turn the forest of Laigne and the wooded heights between the Oise and Matz Valley, the axis of the march of the German left wing: was bere north-east to souto-west; secondly, the German centre had to attack in the direction of Compiegne with Reisons, and Extrees BE immediate objectives thirdly, the enemy's right had to debouch north and west of Montdidier in order to cut off the Somme front from that of the Oise.

M... Clemenceau last night said the day had booä per fectly satisfactory, this being the first time the enemy had gained almost nothing on the first day of an attack despite his enormous efforts. M Clemenccan concluded, "The battle is not finished but the signs are good."

A French communique says: The German drive con- tinued last night with the same desperation.. On our left wing violent attacks were renewed several times and were shattered by our fire and counter-attacks. Coulcelles, which was captured and re-captured, remained in our possession. On our right we bekl of south and east of Ville which has been bitterly disputed. We took prisoner over five nundred in these actions.

Aerial Assistance.

London, June 10. Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reporting on aviation, says: Our air-squadrons, co-operating with the French, worked on the Noyon-Montdidier front on June a continually from. dawn to dusk. Bombing aeroplanes impeced the enemy's advance, barrassing troops and transport with constant machine gunning. Strong patrols of scout machines swept the battle area throughout the day, while highthers wore protecting them. The targets hit included an aerodrome near Boye, where hostile aeroplanes were set on fire upon the ground, au ammunition dump at Montdidier, which went up in a sheet of flame, teams and waggons at Conchy, Forries, Laguy and Bainvillers, infantry in trenches and on roads along and behind the whole tighting line. On the British. front one of our artillery aeroplanes forced a German two- seater to land and surrender at our aerodrome; We brought down fourteen others and drove down-four uncontrollable. Four British are missing.

Tenacious French Resistance

London, June 11.

A Franch communique, states: During the second day of the offensive the enemy sought, by powerful attacks unceasingly strengthened with new effectives, to advance in the direction of Exgress, St. Denis and Ribecourt. Our troops resisted, tenaciously, "but the enemy captured by repeated assaults and at the cost of heavy sacrifices, the villages of Mery, Belioy and St. Maur. Heroic.combata cccurred on Plateau Belloy. South of Hessons-sur-Matiz the enemy gained a footing in Marqueglise. Further east the battle continues on the southern outskirts of Blincourt.. On the right the enemy succeeded in dehonching from Bois. de Thiescourt.. On the left between Courcelles and Babescourt we broke the enemy's attacks, holding our positions. East

of the Oise a German attempt to retake Report failed. Our- airmen brought down eleven enemy aeroplanes Bombing machines intervened in the battle and immediately attacked unceasingly, the enemy's troops massed behind the front to attack. Eighteen tons of projectiles were dropped on enemy. "convoys and rail-stations. A great fire followed by an ex-

plosion was caned at Roye rail-station.

An American communique' says: North-westward of Chateau Thierry, we, co-operating with the French, again improved our positions and inflicted losses. Our patrols. crossed the Harne and successfully reconnoitred hostile positions.

Destroylag Emmy's Communication Lines.

Paris, June 10 The Echo de Paris" referring to the Anglo-French serial activities in destroying the enemy's lines of communi- cation-says-Aringle attack the other day caused ons hundred trucks of shells and numerous ammunition dumps to explode in the station of Longuyen. A single German chasing squadron, loat in one night sixty, airmen and peso- tically all the machines. Chatontents fall of troops received" as much as twenty tons of explosives in two hours.
