Silesian Steamship Co. paid a dividend of 6 per cent, so it Can- not be said that the amalgamation has been for the better although, of course, the enormous increase in working costs has had effect. these ciròumstances the journal continues, it is to be hoped that favourable results can be reckoned upon as freights remain quite reasonable. The United" Bugler and Freightship Co. (Vereinigte Bugler-und Fracht schifferhts Gesellsischaft), of Hamburg, has 'called; an extra- ordinary meeting of shareholders för April 30, in order to come to some decision in regard to the proposed increase in capital from 4,000,000 marks to 6,000,000 marks. There is some opposition to the proposals of the directors, who want to issue new aliäres to the value of 2,000,000 marks only to the old shareholders at 170 par dent., and a counter proposal has, been brought forward" by: shareholder, who suggests that there should be allocated the whole of the 4,000,000 marks of new shares to the present share- holders at the rate mentioned on the basis of two new sharès for every old one held. Another |suggestion is that the style of the company should be alte ed At the general meeting of the Prussian Rheinischen Steamship Go, which was held at Cologne recently the balance sheet for the year 1917 was brought forward and adopted. This showed that there had been a,gross profit of 54.646 marks, against a loss of 8,450 marks, in the previous year. After writing off 225,253 marks, as compared with 174,443 märks,“ which was taken out of the réseiye — apparently, the met profif amounted to 281,138 marks, » The dividend that is, being distributed amounted to 4 per pent, compares with nil; for the previous year. It was elated at the meeting that the restrictions in the Rhine River traffic and in working during the year 1917 were unrelated, and therefore costs kept pe sistently on the - increase. The favourable results compare with the previous year. are dus to the good weather that prevailed, and also to the fact that the fullest advantage. taren of these conditions to push traffic as much Es, possible.
