Speculative Insurance by Named- Staamerk

Underwriters in London and Liverpool have been giving their attention repently to the growing abases of open covers, aud which may be termed speculative. insurance by named steamers,¡a? practice, which is irregular, and which is becoming far too pre- valent in these days. Steps have | been-adopted to, deal promptly with the latter aubject, and, as regards open policy wording, it is an important matter, and especially when dealing with declarations requires careful constructions. Firms of brokers, chiefly in the country, have opened contracts in the belief, apparently, that these would be required by merchants, but in all cases the expectations have not been realised. One great objection to the effecting of tolleles not absolutely required to full the orders of merchants is that the insurance market is filled, al- though to some extent artificially, much more quickly than it would normally be, and consequently rates have a tendency to rise to the disadvantage of the public. The question of the most suitable means of effectively preventing such practices is now receiving the careful attention of the Institute of London Underwriters and the Liverpool Underwriters" Association. No doubt many have seen the osse which lately fiqured in the court, viz, Deần v. National Benefit, and it would' appear from the evidence that there is much to be learned as “ to the correct system of making declarations, and in other matters in connection with 'open policies, which shows how very necessary
